Young European Federalists

Young European Federalists (JEF) is a political youth movement active in most European countries, committed to achieving international democracy through the establishment of federal systems both in Europe and in the world. JEF believe the first step towards peace and world federation is in the creation of a European Federation, and that the challenges posed by increased interdependence can only be resolved through the adoption of democratic solutions at all levels of government, from the supranational to the sub-national level.

Young European Federalists has members in countries throughout Europe.

JEF's Current programs include:

Democracy at All Levels
JEF sees both the European Union and national governments as overly centralized, leading to a high level of political alienation among citizens who feel the decision-making process lacks both transparency and accountability. Members define a stronger European Union as one that is decentralized, democratic and accountable to the people. JEF hopes to reshape the current division of power among national and European institutions, allowing greater political participation and involvement by the people.

Increasing Political Awareness
“Give Europe a Face” was started in 2004 by JEF to increase awareness of the European parliamentary elections. The program encouraged young people to become proactive in the political process and to promote the adoption of the European constitution and European federalism. The 2002 campaign “Europe! A Generation Ahead” was formed in the same vein, promoting youth discussions on the draft European Constitution.

Promoting European Unity
Though consisting of a range of ethnic, religious and national identifications, the countries of Europe share a common cultural, economic and political background. JEF is committed to spreading the idea of “Europeanism” to a growing generation of youths throughout Europe. Europeanism teaches them to look past nationalistic, racist and xenophobic tendencies.

Brussels, Belgium

The Union of European Federalists (UEF) was founded in 1946 with the aim to achieve the European Federation as a first step towards world federalism; its members were among the founders of the World Federalist Movement in 1947. Encouraged by the establishment of the European Union, members have begun to advocate for federalism in other regions.

The UEF is present in more than 20 European countries and has been active at the European, national and local levels for more than 50 years, organizing campaigns, meetings, seminars and conferences throughout the continent.

Towards a Constitution for Europe

A European Constitution is an important starting point toward the goal of a United Federal Europe. Today UEF campaigns for the ratification and quick implementation of the Lisbon Treaty, convinced that its reforms will help the democratic improvement in the functioning of the European Union.

Campaigning for a European Government

The UEF also works in the promotion the creation of a European executive body, a European Government, which should be legitimized by the will of the people in the European Parliament elections. UEF leads the campaign "Who is Your Candidate?" asking the European political parties to nominate their candidate for President of the European Commission. The party winning the majority in the next European Parliament elections should be able to appoint the President of the European Executive that should be the European Commission.

Federal Union

Federal Union was founded in 1938 to campaign for federalism in the UK, Europe and the world. It is the UK section of the Union of European Federalists. Members argue that democracy and the rule of law should apply between states as well as within them. Federalism divides political power between levels of government to achieve the best combination of accountability and effectiveness.

Federal Union has members throughout the United Kingdom and hosts many meetings, most of which are held in London. The organization also has a youth branch called Young Federal Union. Federal Union publishes a newsletter quarterly.

Currently Federal Union works to promote:

European Constitution
The European Union originated from a recognition that there are issues too big for individual countries to solve on their own. European integration was seen as necessary to enable effective solutions to be applied to common problems. Much of the debate about the development of the EU has been around the need to make sure that European decision-making is democratic.

The EURO
The euro is a big change, but it has become a much smaller one in the context of hyperactive international markets. Members of Federal Union continue to research the impact of the EURO since its introduction in 2000.
